Nonprofits Slam NBC Over Broadband Copyright Proposal
The FCC’s network neutrality rulemaking has become a forum for every group with any interest in the matter. As CNet reported last month, NBC even used the proceedings to call for the FCC to impose requirements that broadband providers police their networks for copyright violations.
Today, they report, nonprofits including EFF, Public Knowledge, and EPIC filed a 23-page response (pdf). As the groups argue:
Particularly, these technologies limit First Amendment freedoms, stifle innovation, threaten personal privacy, and do little to address the underlying problem. Additionally, NBC’s proposal invites the FCC to exceed its jurisdiction.
Incidentally, I’m still pretty skeptical of the FCC’s willingness to impose meaningful neutrality regulations. The Democratic commissioners–Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein–are practically chomping at the bit, but I don’t know that any of the three Republicans are willing to go along.
