Linked quotefest: DMCA exemptions coverage in the blogosphere

While I’m stoked about the offline media coverage (AP and NPR, most notably), here’s a choice selection of links to other bloggers’ comments.
Fred von Lohmann, from within the EFF Deeplinks, writes in the most-linked blog entry:
Unfortunately, just as we predicted, all the proposed exemptions that would benefit consumers were denied (space-shifting, region coding, backing up [...]

NPR covers DMCA exemptions story

Quoth NPR.org (where you can listen to the audio):
All Things Considered, November 27, 2006 · The Digital Millennium Copyright Act made it illegal to reproduce copyrighted material from DVDs — even short excerpts. That proved to be an enormous obstacle to the professors of college film-studies programs, who wanted to be able to burn discs [...]

Copyright Office grants 6 exemptions for circumventing TPMs

The Copyright Office today granted 6 exemptions to 17 USC § 1201(a)(1), effective for the next three years, that allow end-users to circumvent technological protection measures in order to make noninfringing uses of certain works.
Two of the exemptions are particularly noteworthy. They are:
1. Audiovisual works included in the educational library of a college or university’s [...]

NFL Network v. cable companies: Fans lose

In an effort to create ever-greater profits, the NFL is now running 8 live games per season on the NFL Network.
Just 40 million households will be able to see the Broncos-Chiefs game on Thanksgiving. As an NFL fan generally and a diasporic Broncos fan in particular, I find this arrangement particularly objectionable.
Living out of market, [...]

FL suit alleges e-voting negligence

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday, several groups accused elections officials in Sarasota County, Florida, of negligence resulting in thousands of undervotes for a hotly contested US House seat. The suit asks for a re-vote.
In the race between Republican Vern Buchanan and Democrat Christine Jennings, elections officials had certified Buchanan as the winner, by a razor-thin [...]

Minilink: Universal Music sues Myspace

No time to write a full post; I’m currently at the National Communication Association conference. But while I lunch, here’s the first of two minilinks:

CNet catfight: Cary Sherman (RIAA) v. Gary Shapiro (CEA)

RIAA President Cary Sherman posted a perspective on CNet today entitled “The farce behind ‘Digital Freedom’“, a savage assault on the Digital Freedom Campaign that has earned an immediate response from Consumer Electronics Association President Gary Shapiro.
Sherman misquotes Shapiro to set up a straw opponent. He also attacks the Digital Freedom Campaign with a misleading [...]

ESA Threatens Fan Site for Reporting on T-Shirt

According to video game fan blog Kotaku, the Entertainment Software Association threatened that it would take legal action against the fan site unless Kotaku takes down all links and images referring to a t-shirt allegedly infringing upon the ESA’s trademarked ratings system. Kotaku isn’t making or selling the t-shirt, which displays an image based on [...]

Can the internet help discourage voter suppression?

I doubt it can stop it cold, but it could have some effect.
Google for “virginia vote suppression” and you get a fistful of good evidence of bad behavior. My favorite is this answering machine message telling a voter they will be criminally prosecuted for trying to vote in VA because they’re registered in NY. (This [...]
