New bill: DMCA + war on drugs

My goodness, copyright holders are just never satisfied. No matter how much Congress gives them, they always want more, and the Bush Admin is just dying to give it to them.

Read this story at CNet RIGHT NOW. Then call your Representative and Senators and tell them this is the worst idea you’ve ever heard of. RIGHT NOW.

By the way, here’s a preposterous, bald-faced lie by AG Alberto Gonzales:

Such changes are necessary because new technology is “encouraging large-scale criminal enterprises to get involved in intellectual-property theft,” Gonzales said, adding that proceeds from the illicit businesses are used, “quite frankly, to fund terrorism activities.”

Liar liar pants on fire. I’ve heard this claim a few times, and it has NEVER come with a SINGLE SHRED of documentation. Even if it were true, it would certainly only apply in foreign countries, in which case this law would do no good to reduce funding allocations to terrorists.

By the way, the story is balanced, detailed, and overall very solid. I like the quotes by Jaszi and Litman.
