There’s a great article at Wired about how the New Orleans city government is successfully running a free wifi network on a million dollars’ worth of spare parts.

Big shock: the telecomm companies want to shut it down. But the Big Easy is goin’ down hard. City tech chief Greg Meffert is vowing to keep the network running until and unless he’s slapped with a federal restraining order.
